Pyper's Party Reveal

After planning for what feels like FOREVER we finally had Pyper's 1st birthday party.  All the details turned out great and everyone, especially the birthday girl, had a lot fun.  Here are some pics from the day.

Flower pot sugar cookie favors.

The birthday cake with edible butterflies.

The birthday girl's "smash" cake.

The banner above the table has each of her month pictures, 0-12 months.

The front of the table banner says, "Pyper's Picnic".

It was a lot of fun planning my first kid party but it was also a lot of work DIYing everything.  I am looking forward to starting some house and furniture projects now.

Also just have to add that my husband and I are now the proud owners of a new minivan!

10 years ago I would have totally made fun of myself for purchasing a minivan and now I am in love with it.  What I used to view as a dorky mom mobile I now view as a child transportation dream.  Isn't it funny how things change?  Our priorities for a new vehicle are much different these days.  Also I am so excited about how many more Craigslist finds are going to fit in my new wheels, gotta love stow and go seating!

Sorry for being MIA

This week has been a crazy roller coaster of ups and downs in our family.

It all started Monday night.  My husband was on his way to work, he works nights, when he heard a weird sound coming from the car.  He pulled over to the side of the freeway, put on his hazard lights, and called me.  While we were debating whether he should come home, go on to work, or head to a body shop, another car hit him!  It had started to snow and the other driver lost control of his car and plowed into the back of our car.

Luckily other than a banged up knee and a sore back my husband was uninjured.  Our car did not come out so well.  It was totaled  so we have spent the past few days dealing with claims agents, tow yards, doctors, new car search, and a million other things.  Our days have been very busy to say the least.

In the midst of all of that it was also our little Pyper's first birthday on Thursday!

We spent the day at the Seattle Aquarium.

We had a great time watching her enjoying all the fish, seals, and other wonderful exhibits. We purchased a family pass so that we can go back and enjoy the aquarium all year.  I have been busy finishing all the details for Pyper's birthday party Sunday and can't wait to celebrate with our friends and family.

When our lives finally calm down I can't wait to start a desk makeover ( found curbside for free!!)  and a million other projects that have been pushed to the back burner after this crazy week.

The perfect party outfit

So today I worked on Pyper's outfit for her birthday this week.  She is going to be a little fairy for her magical garden party.

Today I embellished a shirt for her to wear.  I purchased the top on sale at Gymboree.  I wanted to add a number one to the front. I purchased some floral fabric at Joann's for $1.99. I started by cutting out a number one with my cricut...love that thing!

Then I traced it onto my fabric.

I put fray check on the edges to keep my fabric from fraying.

After I cut it out I ironed it to some interfacing to give my number a little more weight, then I cut it out and adhered it to my shirt.

I could have left it like that but I decided to outline it with a zig zag stitch to add a little more interest.

It was an easy project that really adds a custom touch to her first birthday.

The tutu is from Nordstrom's and was actually one of the first gifts we received when we found out we were having a girl.  It is perfect for her party since the main colors are pink and orange.

I also reworked a Tinkerbell halo to match her party colors and the fairy wings I already embellished.

I can't wait to see her all dressed up at her party!

Ruffles and Rust

Today I attended Ruffles and Rust, a vintage market.  It is a flea market/ craft fair but all the items are home decor specific.  It was my first time attending and I loved it.  It was full of great finds and inspiration.  I didn't purchase a ton but I did come away with lots of great ideas for upcoming projects.

We got there right when it opened and there was already a line to get in.  By the time we left it was getting uncomfortably crowded.

There were over 80 vendors selling all kinds of great treasures.  There was a lot of vintage glassware and ceramics.

All the booths decorations and displays were really fun and unique.

I really loved the vintage suitcases.

Burlap and vintage graphics were seen on a lot of pillow covers in several booths.

I thought this was a great way to reuse silver trays.  I always see them at the Goodwill for $4-$5.

I would love to have this for craft storage but I couldn't rationalize spending $85 to organize glue sticks and glitter.

These ribbon boards were so cute.  They were burlap printed with a vintage postcard graphic.  The twine and nail heads were perfection.  I see this project in my future for sure.

I love all things union jack.  I thought these pillows made with upholstery webbing were a great neutral take on such an iconic image.

This pillow is another project I am going to try at home.

I did come away with a couple things.  I went looking for a wire basket to help with my entry storage.  There were a ton of options there but this one was the perfect size and a good deal at $24.  I like that it has a little bit of rust for character.

I have seen projects done with these coffee sacks before.  I am thinking of using it to recover a bench.  I thought it was a good deal for $3.

Overall I really enjoyed the event.  They had a good range of products in lots of different price ranges.  It is always fun to be inspired by the creations of so many crafty and creative people.

Today was unusually chilly.  I was really hoping that when we got home from Antigua it would be springtime in Seattle.  I have to share a cute pic of our Pyper all bundled up and ready for her first flea market/ craft fair!

Coupons: friend or foe?

 I love coupons.

I probably use them every day.  From everything from clothing to food if I can I will use a coupon.  I never leave the house without my file-a-fold that houses and organizes the plethora of coupons I have.  Over the years I know my obsession with the paper discounts have saved me hundreds if not thousands of dollars.  With that being said I wonder how many dollars I have spent because I had a coupon to use?

If I see a coupon is going to expire soon I will pop in to see if there is something I need (okay, maybe want).  I know I am feeding in to exactly what the corporate bosses who send me the coupons want me to do but, I love to shop.  So then the question becomes would I have gone out and spent the money even if I did not have the coupon? So then the coupon is saving me money after all.

I guess like all things in life it is about finding the balance.  Balancing what I want and what I need.

Since becoming a wife and a mother finding the balance has become easier, almost effortless.  My priorities are no longer the newest handbag or pair of boots.  I still buy shoes a bit out of control but now they are a size 4 and look adorable on my little girl.

So in my life I guess coupons are my friend, okay maybe occasionally a frenemy. I just have to make sure that I try every day to find the balance between want and need…with file-a-fold in hand of course.

Stylish Blogger Award!

So I am doing my post vacation blog catch up and while going through my comments realized I was nominated for the stylish blogger award three times by Life, Crafts, and Whatever, DeJa Renu, and 5 seconds from Crazy!!

Being a new blogger it was a such a great compliment.  Thanks so much to Jennifer, Debra, and Lesley for nominating me and if you haven't already checked their blogs out you should definitely pop over and take a look.

There are rules that go along with receiving the award.

1. Thank and link back to the person who awarded you this award.
2. Share 7 things about yourself.
3. Award 15 recently discovered great bloggers.
4. Contact these bloggers and tell them about the award!

So here goes...

1)  I have a huge crush on Jason Statham.

I don't know if it is the English accent ( like my husband) or that in every movie he is this rugged, take control, one man fighting machine but I can't get enough. I am not deterred at all by the fact that he has no hair and is on the shorter side.  My crush is no secret and my husband knows if a new movie comes out we will be going.  I don't think he minds though considering every movie with him is a action film.

2)  I hate earth worms and slugs.

It is even hard for me to post this pic.

I am not a squeamish person.  I have held tarantulas and been wrapped in a giant snake but on rainy days I have to will myself not to look down because I know "they" will be out.  I know it is ridiculous and that they can't hurt me and that they are good for the environment but it makes no difference, I hate them just the same.

3)  I used to be a Youth Counselor on a cruise ship.

It was the most fun I have ever had at work.  Imagine playing games and leading scavenger hunts with your friends and in your off time exploring the world.  I loved that time of my life.  I made best friends all over the world and met my husband. :)

4)  If I could have any job it would probably be an event planner.

I love to plan a party or get together.  I wouldn't want to work for a large business or corporation.  I love personal events like weddings, birthday, and baby showers.  I love all the little details that make them special. From the invites to the favors I am always on the look out for cute new ideas.

5)  I am obsessed with Bath and Body Works foaming hand soaps.

They are always next to every sink in my house.  I love trying all the new scents and have one shelf in my bathroom stocked with them.  On our recent vacation the hotel just had bar soap in the bathroom and both my husband and I were really looking forward to getting home to our soap.

6)  I wish I was a better cook.

Growing up my mom was a great cook.  She can recreate things from restaurants and make gourmet from things she just found in the fridge.  This is a skill I did not inherent from her.  Part of the problem is that I never cooked a thing, other than Kraft Macaroni and cheese, until I moved out on my own.  Now I can follow a recipe but I only buy cookbooks where there is a picture of every item showing you what it should look like when you're finished.  I am slowly getting better but it is definitely the area of my life where I am the most intimidated.

7)  I am a remote control killer.

I break remotes.  It is not intentional but for some reason remotes always meet their maker when I am around.  I drop them, I get them caught up in blankets and end up flinging them against walls, I have dropped them in sinks full of dishes, remotes can't survive for long around me.  My husband tries to set up designated spots that I have to return them to but he knows it is only a matter of time.  Thank goodness for the invention of the universal remote!

It was fun going through my followers to find new blogs to pass this award on to.  I know the rules say 15 but I was trying to find newer blogs that haven't received the award already.  Here are 8 fun reads to start and I will feature more on my blog as I come across them!
